 Welcome to my “Ironman” Blog

David is the Managing Partner with Daggett Shuler Attorneys in Winston-Salem, NC, a team of lawyers plus staff providing representation to children, families and individuals who are wrongfully injured or disabled, including cyclists and athletes. He has worked his entire career (24 years)  doing the same thing and he “has loved every day!”

David is also the founder and sponsor  of Safe Sober Prom Night, Inc., a non-profit corp. The program encourages positive peer pressure for teenagers to “Do It Right!”, and reinforce awareness of the dangers of drugs and alcohol – Over the past 19 years the program has expanded to more than 470 high schools in North and South Carolina and reaches thousands of young people each year.

Over the past 17 years more than 400,000 students have taken the “Do It Right!” pledge to stay Safe and Sober. The Program is premised on two basic ideals: 1) create an environment and encouragement of positive peer pressure, 2) continual reminders of the dangers of drug ands alcohol. Over the years, growth of the program has been enhanced by partnerships with the State High School Athletic Associations as well as supportive corporate partners.

David has personally spoken hundreds of times to thousands of students. This Spring alone he has personally made over 50 appearances, presentations, and speeches ranging from individual class rooms to entire student bodies. His presentations typically include motivational segments that use Ironman analogies and metaphors resulting in a unique avenue of engagement for young people. Each year David and staff personally pay for and distribute more than 10,000 free T-shirts to students who “Take the Pledge.”

Over the 19 years of the Safe Sober program, Daggett has continued to compete in Triathlons. David is a competitive triathlete having finished over 150 triathlons in the past 27 years, and is a multiple age group winner and overall place finisher at shorter distances. He has also completed 18 Ironman races, so far, including IM Lake Placid in ’05 & ’06, IM Canada four times, IM Germany four times, Ironman Coeur d’Alene in ‘07, and the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii in ’90, ’91, ’92, and ’06. He has an Ironman PR of 10:31 from IM Germany in 1997.

He is an enthusiastic lover and supporter of young people, including his wife and three children. At Church he ushers, teaches Sunday school, presents frequent children’s sermons, and has severed in various (most) leadership roles.

He is a true believer that unless the future generations turn out better than ours, that both have failed – with his efforts we are working toward success, and “like an Ironman on race day we will not fail.”
